Fruit garden, balanced, rather delicate taste

Extremely unusual and madly aromatic Dan Cong picked from high-altitude ancient trees in late winter. This one is a must for any Dan Cong lover.

We all know that Dan Cong is one of the most aromatic tea types out there - redolent in fruits, flowers, woods and resins. Now let's turn that up to an 11.

Tiger Gardenia is the most intense aromatic bomb that I can remember. The mango, lychee and blackcurrant burst from the pot, combined with sweet and zesty rose and gardenia and finished off with a light nougat warmth and resinous spice. If this does not 'wow' anyone's senses, then we might as well give up and go home.

Sometimes called 'Tiger Dan Cong', this tea is unusual and is not produced every year - in fact, is something of a rarity to see it available.

Tiger Dan Cong can only be produced after an unusually warm winter which causes some of the tea bushes to sprout very early. This tea was picked in late winter (Feb 2022), about 2 months before the usual Spring harvests.

This early flushing phenomenon tends to only happen with very old tea bushes growing at higher altitudes. The bushes used for this tea are from the Gardenia (Huang Zhi Xiang) variety and are a staggering 120-150 years old (estimated), growing at up to 1000m.

The age of the tea trees provides a deep structure in the mouth and a long, sweet and cooling finish, somewhat similar to Raw PuErh.

Finding tea from this age of tea bush is already a luxury, but for it to be an early flushing 'Tiger' tea is crazy special - we only have 10kg of this tea.

I have tried to find out why they call this exceptional tea a 'Tiger' tea, and I was told that it is because the momentum of the late winter sprouting from these old trees is very strong and forceful, so it was given Tiger characteristics.

The taste of Tiger Gardenia combines the fruity, floral bliss of Spring Dan Cong with the winter air freshness and milky character of Snow Flake harvests (November). It is one of the fullest and richest Dan Cong experiences out there.

I have no idea if/when we will be able to get our hands on another Tiger but we will always be searching!
