Gua Feng Zhai is the most sought after village in Yiwu. It is a remote village area to the far East of Xishuangbanna and right next to the Laos border. With rich biodiversity, ancient trees and the handcrafted skills of the Yao minority, this village is renowned in PuErh world for producing some of the richest and developed PuErh tea.
While Yiwu is famed for its sweet and plush character (it is known as the Queen of PuErh), Gua Feng Zhai adds another layer of depth and complexity, The aromatics are richer and more varied, the mouthfeel is more structured and defined and the finish is more physical.
We have been trying to purchase Gua Feng Zhai PuErh for many years but the price of this village is very high and we found it hard to justify the price despite the delicious nature of the tea. We have managed to get a really incredible deal with this tea after many years of building relationships with the PuErh producers and I am so thrilled to be able to offer a Gua Feng Zhai Dashu at such a steal. Yes, it is still a premium ticket tea but the quality is worth every cent or penny.
The balance for this tea is supreme. It moves from soft and oily to a brief blanket of dry puckering before lifting to sweet juiciness. The taste and aromatics have all of the hallmarks of Yiwu (honeyed, plummy and sweet) but with a more adult edge. Honey becomes wild forest honey, plum becomes alcohol soaked prunes and florals become heady with sweet muskiness. It is a really special experience and I am not sure if we will be able to source again such a sought after tea at such a price.
