Yellow tea was formerly an exclusive tea for the Chinese Emperor but the method to create this tea was lost for hundreds of years and rediscovered in the 1970’s. Since then it has been produced in specific areas of China (Hunan and Anhui) in small batches and is still thought of as a premium gift tea (usually to businessmen and politicians).
Making Yellow tea is a very skilled and handmade process. The leaves go through the same processing as a top drawer Green tea but then steamed and covered for them to ‘reabsorb their flavour’. This creates a light and soft brew with less grassiness than a Green tea and a sweet and smooth finish.
It really is not easy to find a good Yellow tea because it is produced in such tiny quantities and most of the premium leaves are sold in China (at silly prices). But this is an excellent Huang Ya Yellow and we have managed to negotiate a fair price for you teaheads.
