Exemplary Golden Bud Dianhong produced from 300-year-old trees for a uniquely rich experience and sweetest of finishes.
We have been sourcing Dianhong teas for over 20 years but I have never tasted one as remarkable as this batch.
Dianhong is a very popular style of bud-heavy Black tea from Yunnan. It was one of the first tea revelations which I had back in 2001 and propelled me to dive deeper into tea. In other words, I have always loved this tea type and have tasted many hundreds of batches over the years.
But, when I tasted this batch on my sampling table I was taken aback - it was richer, more complicated and had a crazy sweet and tingly finish.
What was going on?! Gushu (ancient tree) that's what.
Wildwood Gold is a batch of Dianhong made from pickings of 300-year-old trees and that ancient history elevates the experience to new delights.
All of the malty, smooth and chocolatey notes that you would expect from a Dianhong are here but everything is amped up.
The malt is deeper, the chocolate is darker and the smoothness is uber-oily.
And then, all of the other elements, which are not normally in Dianhongs, come out to play.
A mouthful of fruits from cherries to redcurrants to port wine blends in a heavenly way with all of those chocolates.
Mix in some black pepper spice, purple flower florals and brown bread warmth and you are starting to get the full picture.
The kicker is the finish though - sweet, sweet, sweeeet! Rock sugar and mint humbugs coat all the way down your throat for hours.
Gushu in full effect - a must-try for any Black tea lover.
