Gem Juice Outlaw

Fascinating ripe tea made from the purple Zi Juan tea variety.

The Zi Juan variety was supposedly created by the Xishuangbanna tea research people in the late eighties or early nineties. It was created by crossing a Fujianese purple tea plant with the Assamica variety which is famous in Yunnan. I have tasted many tea types made with this variety but I have never purchased any. The reason is that while the character of the Zi Juan is bright, light and citrusy, I felt that the tea lacked enough body and depth.

On my travels to Yunnan this year, I tasted this ripened, fermented Zi Juan and it was an instant love affair. The ripening process seems to really work well with this variety, keeping that bright and zesty character, while adding warmth, strength and sweetness.

This is a totally unique tea, unlike any other ripe tea I have ever tasted - it is creamy and tangy with a crazy bone dry texture but zero bitterness. The physical reaction of the tea in your mouth is a bit mad actually and I find myself addictively going back to this PuErh to experience its unique qualities.
