Old World vs New World Tea

Discussing the fresh frontiers of tea production and tasting an Oolong in Bangkok.

Our shelves are filled with teas from China, Taiwan and Japan but this does not mean that we do not seek out leaves from other countries. We have spent a fair amount of time tasting tea from Thailand, Vietnam and the sub continent too.

I have found sublime Darjeelings and enjoyed the Wintergreen of Amba Blacks and I am certain that we will be bringing in some of these teas if we can find the right producers and not have to buy through commercial wholesalers.

But, in my opinion there is a clear difference between these newer world teas and their old world counterparts. I think that it is very similar to wine (I am not a wine buff so please forgive if I am wrong).

The general standard of newer world tea is good - you do not find that many dud teas - but they taste too standardised and lacking individual character. Old world teas require you tasting a lot of 'meh' tea but when you find a winner it shines out above all other tea. This is the thrill that I get when sourcing.

I am excited to try more and more of these younger origin teas and I encourage all producers to experiment and find their own unique mastery of the leaves.
