Silk Oolong is a scented version of Alishan Cream. Both teas are made in Taiwan from the Jin Xuan cultivar which has a naturally milky and creamy taste but this one is ultra milky!
The market is flooded with Milk Oolongs which are artificially scented for a powerful milky taste. Many sellers feed clients the most ridiculous stories to explain the powerful milky aroma such as that the tea was 'watered' with milk, steamed over milk or dried with milk powder. These are all lies because the sole way to achieve the ultra milky aroma is through artificial flavourings. If any seller tells you that it is made with natural flavourings they are lying too.
I personally do not like including a tea in our range which is artificially scented but we had so many requests from our clients to provide this tea that we decided to honour their requests. We tasted many of these flavoured teas which range from the disgusting to the surprisingly yummy and we have sourced the best 'Milk Oolong' out there and we made sure to use a Jin Xuan cultivar as a base so as to keep things as genuine as possible.
This is the one and only artificially scented tea that we will ever stock at Mei Leaf because of so many requests but I would advise everyone to try the original, pure, unscented cultivar. It may not be as powerfully milky as the scented versions but Alishan Cream is so much more balanced and nuanced with that bright green Oolong freshness to contrast with the creaminess. For a darker brew of the pure Jin Xuan cultivar try our Midnight Sun.
