Famed Chinese Green using ancient steaming methods. Crisp, dewy, mineral and sweet wth layered warmth.

Most Chinese Green teas are fired in a hot wok.

Enshi Yulu is different.

One of China's last great steamed Green teas, Enshi Yulu preserves an ancient processing technique that was once common throughout China before being largely abandoned centuries ago. While Japan developed steaming into an art form, China embraced pan-firing—leaving Enshi Yulu as a fascinating glimpse into an alternative history of Chinese tea.

The result is a tea of remarkable purity. Often times I find Enshi Yulu to be 'too pure' and feeling empty, but this batch is different, bridging purity with richness.

Enshi Yulu occupies a unique place in the tea world.

It combines the vibrancy often associated with steamed Japanese greens with the elegance, floral complexity and layered sweetness of fine Chinese tea. The result is neither Japanese nor typical Chinese green tea—but something beautifully balanced between the two.

Its bright jade liquor delivers fresh aromas of steamed greens, sweet melon, wild strawberries and morning dew. On the palate it is clean, crisp and vibrant, with a cooling mineral sweetness that lingers long after each sip.

For lovers of Japanese steamed teas, Enshi Yulu offers a familiar combination of umami and freshness through a distinctly Chinese lens.

Taste Profile

Imagine walking through a mountain meadow on a summer's dawn.

The tea has warm notes of granola and malty hay with a savoury kick of lovage.

The aromatics are deep with vegetal umami but on the tongue that salinity reveals delicate florals, dill syrup and sweet green melon.

As the session progresses, layers of sweetness accumulate, leaving a lingering sensation that lives up to the tea's name:

Why This Tea Is Special

Rare Chinese Steaming Tradition

Nearly all famous Chinese green teas are pan-fired. Enshi Yulu is one of the few celebrated exceptions, preserving a processing method that emphasises freshness, brightness and aromatic purity.

Distinctive Terroir

Grown in the misty mountains of Enshi, Hubei Province, this tea benefits from cool temperatures, abundant cloud cover and mineral-rich soils that contribute to its vibrant sweetness and clarity.

A Different Expression of Green Tea

Steaming locks in the fresh character of the leaf, producing a greener, more dew-like profile than most Chinese greens while retaining the elegance and complexity that define fine Chinese tea.
